General Motors (GM) has announced a critical safety recall affecting more than 62,000 heavy-duty trucks due to a severe fire risk that can occur even when the vehicle is parked. The recall encompasses 62,468 model year 2019-2024 Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty trucks, specifically the 4500 HD, 5500 HD, and 6500 HD lines.
Technical Defect and Hazard
The fire hazard is attributed to a defect within the brake pressure sensor assembly. This component may leak brake fluid into the brake pressure switch, which can subsequently cause an electrical short circuit. This electrical short can overheat the circuit, significantly increasing the risk of an under-hood fire. The danger of fire persists whether the truck is being driven or is completely shut off and parked.
Immediate Safety Advisory for Owners
In response to the potential for fire while parked, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and General Motors have issued an immediate safety warning to all affected owners.
